In the vibrant cultural hub of Berlin, a unique artistic venture named quentinscabinet is redefining the portrayal of male images by intertwining historical, contemporary, and fictional elements. Through a meticulous process of deconstruction and reassembly, these portraits are not just artworks but windows into reconstructed moments from the past.
At the heart of quentinscabinet's technique is the act of tearing portraits into 16 equal pieces before reassembling them. This method symbolizes the fragmented nature of historical memory and the reconstruction of moments lost in time. The choice of the number 16 is a homage to 16mm film, introduced in 1923, which gained widespread use for news documentation during World War II and later became the industry standard for analog video before the advent of digital technology. This reference bridges the gap between historical documentation and modern reinterpretation.
Each portrait is meticulously hand-painted with a 'blue' screen background. This deliberate choice removes any contextual distractions, focusing the viewer's attention solely on the subject. The use of blue is particularly significant, evoking 'Prussian Blue,' a pigment formulated in Berlin in 1708 by Johann Jacob Diesbach and later known as 'Berlin Blue.' This historical nod ties the artwork to the city's rich past, further deepening the viewer's connection to the pieces.
